How Does The Conquer Depression Program Work?

What Are The Steps of The Program?

  1. Step 1 deals with the physical and physiology. It teaches you how to reconnect with your body, expand your senses, develop optimal breathing and understand the role activity and exercise can play in recovery.
  2. Step 2 teaches you to master feeling states and emotions by offering a cutting edge theory of emotion and it’s role in health and wellness. This step teaches you how to interpret depression symptoms as blocked emotions, let your feelings flow without resistance, clear what you don’t want or need, and break free of the ‘mental matrix’ that can keep you trapped or shackled.
  3. Step 3 shows you how to feel good about yourself. It teaches you how to reconnect with your template or blueprint for health and wellness, step into your truth and be all of who you are. How Do I know if I’m depressed?

Depression symptoms can manifest themselves in many different ways and can also increase gradually over time making them harder to detect in the early stages. The symptoms can be wide ranging and the symptoms can appear to be constant and relentless. Your symptom experiences may well include:

  • Low mood
  • Hopelessness
  • Lack of motivation
  • Confusion and a sense of being lost or stuck
  • Loss of appetite, weight loss, or weight gain
  • Cognitive dysfunction – ‘brain fog’, inability to concentrate and memory loss
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Loss of pleasure and interest in life
  • Agitation
  • Fatigue and lack of energy
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Weakness
  • Aches and pains
  • Loss of libido

I’d like to be very clear: We often think that when we experience symptoms there is something wrong with our body. While this can be the case, a more useful way of looking at symptoms for the condition of depression, is that your body is seeking to get your attention, to let you know that something is not quite right. 

How Long Will It Take to Recover?

As soon as you begin the program you will notice that you begin to feel better and more empowered. As you implement the 5 Steps you will notice changes in how you feel, and you will begin to change how you see yourself and the world. You can go through the program at a rate that feels right for you, there is no right and wrong about how fast you complete the program. However, I do encourage you to complete each step thoroughly. The more you put into the program the more you will get out of it.

Your natural state, your default setting is to be depression free. It already lies within you, we simply have to uncover it.

New Scientific Advances

Challenging or altering negative thinking patterns forms the backbone of many approaches to beat depression. The majority of techniques and self-help strategies that adopt this approach are based on the theory that all emotion follows thought; therefore, modify your thinking in order to change how you feel. However, leading edge scientific evidence tells us that emotional processing operates at a much higher speed than cognitive processing. This means that in many cases thinking is driven by emotion rather than the other way around

Research also reveals that when emotion is triggered, there is increased activity within the thinking centers of the brain. Emotion is not something imaginary or all in the mind as is often thought. Emotion is a complex physiological process that affects all of your body and all of your brain. It impacts on the functioning of the cells of your body and even your DNA. 

In practical terms, emotion is a call to action. It’s purpose is to help you navigate through daily life. When it becomes blocked or out of balance problems ensue in the form of physical and psychological symptoms. 

What Do You Have To Do…

Isn’t Depression Caused by a Chemical Imbalance in the Brain?

The simple answer to this question is no. Although the pharmaceutical industry propagates the theory that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance, all the scientific evidence refutes this claim. In some cases of depression symptoms may coexist with brain chemical changes or alterations. However, this brain chemistry make-up is a result of the depression, not the cause. 

What’s The Conventional Approach to Treating Depression?

  1. Medication. The conventional approach to treating depression is through medication.  However, scientific research tells us that medication is unlikely to offer any significant relief for mild to moderate depression, and only minor relief for severe depression. In addition, anti-depressants all have a long list of negative side effects, often causing more problems requiring additional medication to treat these symptoms. The other concern is that even when benefits are evident they can be short lived. This means that eventually medication either needs to be changed or dosages increased.  For those who do take medication, the policy of most primary care doctors is to keep the symptoms at bay with ongoing prescription medication, rather than finding the reasons for the symptoms in the first place.
  2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT was originally created in 1950’s and is primarily based on challenging and changing negative or dysfunctional thinking patterns. As you will see below, destructive or dysfunctional thinking patterns may exacerbate depression, but they are not the cause

What About Alternative Approaches to Managing Depression?

  1. ​​Sunlight. Exposure to sunlight can boost mood enhancing serotonin levels, and lead to increased vitamin D levels. Given this knowledge there is little doubt as to the value and importance of sunlight and vitamin D. Interestingly, rates of depression increase during the summer months, which seems somewhat counterintuitive given the curative value of sunlight. This is a tool, not the full solution.
  2. Exercise. We know that vigorous strenuous exercise increases or enhances our ability to deal with pain and discomfort. It boosts our mood, facilitates the release of endorphins that trigger positive feelings, and acts as an analgesic. Exercise is definitely a worthwhile pursuit; however, it does not deal with the root cause of depression and it won’t cure it.
  3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Consuming St. John’s Wort and/or omega-3 fatty acids through supplements such as cod liver oil or krill oil are often touted as effective preventative measures in guarding against depression. While there is certainly some value in this, if you are currently experiencing depression, supplements such as omega-3s and St. John’s Wort are unlikely to have a significant impact on your symptom levels — again, because they do not address the root cause of your depression.
